Here is a video of my latest toy. It's a 3 degree of freedom motion
platform (pitch, roll, heave) for flight simulation. It's a great way to
keep myself proficient on instruments without paying to be in the air.
As of now the time in the simulator is not logable, but I intend to look
into buying approved avionics/software so that I can log instrument
time.
Normally I have the rig enclosed and the lights turned out (except for
a single red cockpit light to read charts) so that there is a greater
feeling of motion, but that would have made for a pretty lame video.
Everything is homemade including the electric linear actuators. If
you have access to a wood shop and are good with your hands, you
could have a motion platform in your basement for a lot less that you
ever thought possible! The electrical circuitry and signal processing
unit can seem a bit daunting, but I was a complete newcomer to
electronics and it was actually VERY easy.
As you can tell it can be a bit noisy, but after running the simulator
sound through a good aviation headset I can't hear a thing. very
realistic flight simulator experience!!
